The Architecture of Control

North Korea, 2019

In 2019 I photographed inside North Korea, across Pyongyang, Kaesong, and the rural corridor toward Nampo. Access was structured, with minders deciding where we went and what we saw. Some of these images were made within those limits. Others were not.

What is revealed to outsiders by the state is its argument about itself, for itself. When you are inside of it, you can see exactly the extraordinary effort this argument requires. It has been manufactured to establish dominance across all aspects of everyday life. It is a living, breathing system, maintained deliberately at enormous cost by people who know exactly what it is.
